По стилю исполнения специалисты относят этот натюрморт к группе произведений 1898-1899 гг., созданных художником на Корсике в Тулузе. Поездка на Корсику, встреча с яркой южной природой, с ослепительным светом солнца помогли Матиссу уйти от изменчивой, мерцающей импрессионистической световоздушной стихии. Матисс почти по-сезановски уплотняет воздух, интенсифицирует свет и форму. И, наверное, не случайно, возникает образ срезанных, но продолжающих излучать солнечную энергию подсолнухов. Эти цветы, так же как и характер энергичных пастозных мазков, заставляют вспомнить о живописи Ван Гога.

Appendicitis and First Drawings
While Matisse was recovering from an appendectomy, his mother bought him art supplies. Copying postcards in the hospital, he became fascinated with painting and decided to become an artist.
1891
Abandoned Law for Painting
Matisse gave up his job as a clerk for a court attorney and, overcoming his father's opposition, came to Paris to study painting.
1896
Debut at the Salon of the Société Nationale
Five of Matisse's paintings were shown at the Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts; two were purchased by the state. At the suggestion of Puvis de Chavannes, he became an associate member of the Salon.

Meeting John Peter Russell
On the island of Belle-Île, Matisse met the Australian painter John Peter Russell, who introduced him to Impressionism and the work of Van Gogh and explained colour theory to him. Matisse later called Russell his teacher.

Marriage to Amélie Parayre
Matisse married Amélie Parayre, the daughter of a schoolteacher from Toulouse. The marriage produced sons Jean and Pierre; his wife and his daughter Marguerite became the artist's favourite models.
