Om maleriet

This painting is from an album that contains 200 pictures showing Chinese men and women engaged in various occupations. Accompanying each picture is a brief description in Chinese that explains what the picture illustrates. In this case a man is taking his son to school. The lantern and cakes the man carries are symbols of luck. The first owner of the album has added his own pencil annotations in English. Paintings similar to this one were produced to satisfy the curiosity of Westerners who wanted to know more about China.
