His father had set up a lace factory in Calais. Bonington was fourteen; because of this move to France he is also counted as a French artist.

The family moves to Paris
The family moved to Paris to open a lace shop there.

His first two Normandy watercolours were shown at the Paris Salon of 1822.

Wins a gold medal at the Paris Salon
He won a gold medal at the Paris Salon, together with John Constable and Anthony Vandyke Copley Fielding.
