— [Sabine Grabner 8/2009] — Karl Markó, who was Hungarian by birth, has placed this scene from the New Testament in a heroic landscape with classical temple ruins and urban architecture from the South. Peter, his brother Andrew and a helper have just brought the fishing boat back to shore. Jesus is standing at the top of stone steps and greets them with the words: "Come with me, and I will make you fishers of men." (Mk 1, 17). — Markó, who spent a large part of his life in central Italy, preferred to paint landscapes with staffage figures. These are only rarely real scenes from nature, although the vegetation and terrain resemble various areas in Italy. The remarkable aspect of these scenes is the rendering of sunlight, which the painter was capable of capturing brilliantly. Ideal landscapes that emulate the example of Claude Lorrain (1600–1682), such as this painting, are in fact rare in Markó's œuvre. — [Sabine Grabner 8/2009]
