Imens i livet hos John Martin

Hele livet
  1. 1818

Sells “The Fall of Babylon” for £420

With the sale of “The Fall of Babylon” for £420 (the painting is also dated 1819) Martin at last rids himself of debt.

  2. 1818

    Buys a house in Marylebone

Having cleared his debts, Martin buys a house in Marylebone, where he comes into contact with artists, writers, scientists and Whig nobility.

  3. 1820

Five thousand paying viewers for “Belshazzar’s Feast”

Martin’s triumph: the picture excites much favourable and hostile comment, five thousand people pay to see it, and the British Institution awards it a prize of £200 — the “Joshua” had earlier carried off a premium of £100 there.
