The earliest photographs of Malta, en route to Egypt
During a stop at Malta on his way to Egypt, he takes the earliest known photographs of the island at Fort Manoel; they are now believed to be lost. Drawn to the daguerreotype, he also photographs in Egypt as reference material for his paintings.

Second extended visit to Russia
Returns to Russia on diplomatic missions; over the course of his visits he paints several pictures commissioned by the imperial court, and Nicholas I continues to favour him.

His nephew and pupil Frédéric Goupil-Fesquet publishes the two-volume “Voyage d'Horace Vernet en Orient”.

His daughter Louise, wife of the painter Paul Delaroche, dies at the age of thirty-one.

Baudelaire sharply condemns him in his Salon reviews
In his reviews of the Salons of 1845 and 1846, Charles Baudelaire harshly condemns Vernet, seeing in him a soldier who paints and rejecting his noisy, drum-beating art; Théophile Gautier firmly defends the painter.
