Om maleriet
Albert Edelfelt spent many summers at the country manor of Haiko, not far from Helsinki, where he combined work with family life, as is clearly demonstrated in this painting. With a few rapid brush strokes he conveys the gathering for a meal. Today, Edelfelt’s studio by the manor is a museum.

The Pasteur portrait triumphs at the Paris Salon
The portrait of Pasteur in his laboratory, painted in 1885 with the scientist — who had a good sense of public relations — helping to plan it, was a great success at the Salon of 1886 and became one of the most familiar images of him. It earned the painter the Legion of Honour.

Illustrates Runeberg's “The Tales of Ensign Stål”
Having taken to illustrating poetry, Edelfelt illustrated the epic poem by Johan Ludvig Runeberg, a family friend he admired. Runeberg's company left a lasting mark on him and at times drew him to scenes from Finnish history.
