    Leaves to study in Italy

His parents wanted their son to become a naval officer, but he cared only for drawing and painting, and he went to study art in Italy. The Italian years (1859–1866) were important for the development of his historical style; his early work consisted of rural scenes of everyday life.

Hans Christian Andersen writes Bloch a New Year's letter

In a New Year's letter, Hans Christian Andersen tells the painter that what God has arched on solid rock will not be swept away. In another letter he writes that Bloch's art adds a new step to his Jacob's ladder into immortality.

  3. 1867 · Udmærkelse

Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog

  4. 31 May 1868

    Marries Alma Trepka in Rome

He met his future wife, Alma Trepka, in Rome, and they married there. The marriage was happy until her early death in 1886.
