Сине-зеленый тон доминирует, но в него вторгается тускло-красный, безрадостный цвет шейного платка и губ, как тщетная попытка женщины, приукрасив себя, выбраться из вездесущего холода синевы. Конкретная модель обретает родовые черты всех персонажей голубого периода, воплощая размышления Пикассо о том, что "скорбь составляет фон жизни", о страдании, смирении и сострадании.
