Algernon Newton's reputation rests chiefly on his eerily deserted London cityscapes; rural subject matter such as this drawing represents a departure for him. Despite this, he was an enthusiastic contributor to the Recording Britain project, with eight drawings of sites in Suffolk.
Giffords Hall at Stoke-by Nayland, Suffolk, was the home of a noble Catholic family, the Mannocks.
