The buffalo had always played an important role in Chinese life. It was an important working animal when Imperial China was an agricultural nation. It was a popular theme in decorative art as a symbol of diligence and productivity. It was also associated with Daoism. Laozi, the founder of this native Chinese religion, was usually depicted riding a green buffalo.
