Watercolour sketch of the actor/manager Henry Irving (1838-1905) in the role of Dr. Primrose in a production of Olivia,unsigned and undated.

The play by W.G.Wills (1828-1891) was an adaptation of the novel The Vicar of Wakefield by Oliver Goldsmith (1730-1774). It was first performed at the Court Theatre in 1878 and revived at the Lyceum Theatre in 1885.
