Draws Arthur Schopenhauer from life
In the summer of 1847 in Frankfurt the young Leighton met the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer and drew his portrait in graphite and gouache, the only known full-length study of Schopenhauer done from life.

Leaves revolutionary Frankfurt for Paris
Two years after taking up his studies in Frankfurt, Leighton left the city because of the revolutionary unrest and moved to Paris.
1850
Returns to Frankfurt and completes his studies
In 1850 Leighton and his family were back in Frankfurt, where he completed his studies and began his first large-scale pictures, on scenes from the life of the 13th-century Italian painter Cimabue. His teachers on the Continent were Eduard von Steinle and then Giovanni Costa.
