Knighted at Windsor Castle
In 1878, the year he was elected President of the Royal Academy, Leighton was knighted at Windsor Castle and made an Officer of the Légion d’honneur; from then on he was known as Sir Frederic Leighton.

Italy asks for his self-portrait for the Uffizi
In 1880 the Italian government invited Leighton to send his self-portrait for the Uffizi’s unique collection of self-portraits by famous painters in Florence.
