Om værket

Kawano Kaoru was a highly influential print artist and a leading figure of the postwar sōsaku hanga (creative print) movement in Japan. Born in Hokkaidō, the rugged northernmost island of Japan, Kawano is best known for his serene woodblock prints depicting mothers and children, images that conveyed sensitivity and quiet strength during a period of national recovery following World War II. Kawano achieved remarkable recognition during his lifetime. In 1954, he became the first Japanese artist to receive a prize at the São Paulo Biennale, but his life was cut tragically short when he died in 1965 at the age of 49. Kawano’s prints are characterized by simplified forms and gentle lines, often employing muted palettes that enhance their emotional restraint.
