Om værket
This design is part of a collection of drawings that were acquired by the museum with designs by Matthias Lock. While the designs are evidently by different hands, this design for a commode has been attributed to Thomas Chippendale, a fashionable London cabinet-maker.
This workshop design for a commode demonstrates the fashion for rococo-inspired furniture which became popular during the first half of the eighteenth-century. The rococo was characterised by curvaceous forms, natural imagery and asymmetry and Chippendale produced many designs for commodes in this style. The asymmetry within this drawing is due to the incorporation of different designs of certain parts of the commode to demonstrate the way in which these could be combined.
