Society portraits
After 1920 he is increasingly occupied with portraits of wealthy and distinguished Parisians — Sacha Guitry, the fashion designer Jeanne Lanvin, her daughter the Countess Marie-Blanche de Polignac, the inventor Marcel Kapferer — usually in their studios, homes or backstage, preferring distemper on canvas.
1921–1922
Panels for Camille Bauer in Basel
In 1921 he receives a commission from the patron Camille Bauer for decorative panels for his residence in Basel: four panels and two overdoor paintings, finished by 1922.

The artist’s mother dies
Vuillard lived with his mother until he was sixty, until her death. She was a dressmaker, and the world of fabrics and clothes surrounded him from childhood.
