Begins writing poetry at Merrill’s urging
Encouraged by her friend and mentor James Merrill, for many years Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets, she begins to write poetry in her eighties; her poems appear regularly in The Yale Review, Poetry, The Paris Review and The New Yorker until the end of her life.
1997
The Dorothea Tanning Foundation is established
The Dorothea Tanning Foundation is established, dedicated to preserving the artist’s legacy and fostering a broader public understanding of her art, writing and poetry.
1999
Exhibition of new paintings at Boston University
An exhibition of an entire collection of her new paintings is held at the Boston University art gallery.
2000
“Birthday and Beyond” at the Philadelphia Museum of Art
The Philadelphia Museum of Art mounts a small retrospective, Birthday and Beyond — by one account to mark the artist’s 90th birthday, by another to mark the museum’s acquisition of her self-portrait Birthday.
