In this miniature intaglio print, Nakahashi presented a single black diamond set into a surreal landscape as a visual metaphor for a “confident life.” Balanced on one point, the diamond dominates the colorful but largely barren landscape, extending beyond the scene’s border. The enigmatic image suggests a state of harmony, consistency, and coherence. Nakahashi used geometric or abstract forms as metaphorical stand-ins for life in many of his works.
