Anverso: Escena en un jardín. Figura sentada en un banco junto a un gran árbol. Parece dialogar con otra figura, que parece inclinarse frente a ella. Detrás de ésta, un tercer personaje a caballo. Al fondo el jardín se cierra con un muro en el que se abre una puerta, flanqueada por pilares rematados con un elemento decorativo. Sobre el dibujo se ha copiado por contacto el nº Inv. 15559, que ha traspasado también hasta el reverso. Reverso: Caricaturas. Dos figuras caricaturescas, de cabezas desproporcionadamente grandes. Una lleva corona y barba, y va montada en un equino de patas muy largas. La otra, con una gran nariz, le sigue a pie llevando una chistera en las manos. En la parte superior, sol.

Madrid: studying the old masters in the Prado
At eighteen Sorolla travelled to Madrid and studied the master paintings in the Museo del Prado with great energy.

A four-year grant to study in Rome
Having completed his military service, the twenty-two-year-old Sorolla received a grant from the Spanish Academy in Rome for four years of study in Italy. In Rome he was welcomed by the academy’s director, Francisco Pradilla, in whose example the young painter found stability.

Paris: his first encounter with modern painting
A long stay in Paris gave him his first exposure to modern painting; he was especially struck by exhibitions of Jules Bastien-Lepage and Adolph von Menzel. Back in Rome he studied with José Benlliure, Emilio Sala and José Villegas Cordero.
