Om skulpturen

This bust of Jonathan Swift (1667 - 1745) is made from Black Basalt. Made using the local black-firing clay known as ‘Carr’, Josiah Wedgwood I (1730 - 1795) named this ‘refined’ clay body as ‘black basalt’ in reference to the hard stone it imitated. Like stone materials, Wedgwood’s clays could be cut or polished to a high shine.
