He follows Gussow, who has become director of the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin, to finish his studies there; he shares a studio with Christian Krohg, the two admire Émile Zola and Gustave Flaubert, and Adolph von Menzel serves as his model.

He graduates from the Academy and studies the drawings and prints of Dürer, Rembrandt, Goya, Runge, Menzel and Rops, masters more aligned with his sensibilities.
