The Order of Merit: protests and Roger Fry's barb
King Edward VII honoured Alma-Tadema with the newly founded Order of Merit, together with two other figures of Victorian art, which caused protests. The critic of the new generation Roger Fry remarked acidly that the new order would take a long time to disinfect from Alma-Tadema's “sweet soap”.

Death of his wife Laura
On 15 August 1909 his second wife, the painter Laura Alma-Tadema, died at the age of fifty-seven; her death was a heavy blow, and he outlived her by less than three years.
