Death of his wife Laura
On 15 August 1909 his second wife, the painter Laura Alma-Tadema, died at the age of fifty-seven; her death was a heavy blow, and he outlived her by less than three years.

Treatment for a stomach ulcer in Wiesbaden
In the summer of 1912 Alma-Tadema went with his daughter Anna to the Kaiserhof Spa in Wiesbaden to be treated for stomach ulcers; he died there.
