William Henry Hunt, who is better known for his landscape paintings and watercolours, took up figurative painting after 1824 depicting subjects that are often humorous or sentimental in nature. He also made several portraits of black people, but few of the sitters have been identified.
This model appears in another watercolour by the artist (V&A, FA. 339) in which he wears the same jacket.
