O obrazu

The Terrace, a Dutch painting of about 1660 in Chicago's Art Institute, uses a window to frame objects at different distances. Military equipment, musical instruments and songbooks suggest worldly interests and romance. The chief concern, however, is the convincing illusion of near and distant space. Such optical problems particularly interested painters working in Delft. Hung inside a collector's house, this view would have made the division between the actual room and the depicted outdoors less distinct. On view in gallery 213.

Slovy muzea

The military gear, musical instruments, and songbooks scattered throughout this composition hint at worldly and romantic pursuits, but the chief subject of the painting is the illusionism of the near and far objects framed by the window. Optical challenges were particularly intriguing to artists working in the Dutch city of Delft. This painting would have blurred the boundaries of indoor and outdoor when hung in a collector’s home.
