O obrazu
Goya's The Stilts, dated 1791, is in the Museo del Prado in Madrid. Two stilt walkers and a flute player appear in this scene of adult amusement. The painting belongs to his seventh series of tapestry cartoons, commissioned for Charles IV's study at the Escorial. The canvas was rediscovered in a Madrid royal palace basement in 1869 and reached the museum the following year.

After the death of Charles III he became court painter to Charles IV, painting a number of portraits of the king and his consort.

Grave illness and loss of hearing
An undiagnosed illness left Goya deaf; he found refuge in Cádiz with the collector Sebastián Martínez. After the illness his art grew darker and more pessimistic.
