O obrazu
William Sommer painted The Pool around 1916–19, drawing on the rural surroundings of Brandywine, Ohio. The picture is in the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland. Sommer moved to this community between Cleveland and Akron in 1914 and made a studio in an unused schoolhouse. Painters, poets and musicians gathered there. The local countryside supplied subjects for much of his later work, including this painting, whose manner also owes a debt to French avant-garde art. Sommer looked to nature for a freedom from conventional approaches to painting.
Slovy muzea
In 1914, Sommer moved to Brandywine—located halfway between Cleveland and Akron—where he converted an abandoned schoolhouse into a studio that became an important meeting place for modern artists, poets, and musicians. This rural community provided inspirational subject matter for much of his subsequent work, including The Pool, which also reveals his stylistic debt to French avant-garde art. Seeking freedom from convention by immersing himself in nature, Sommer explained, “I believe art should be as spontaneous as the song of a bird.”
