O obrazu
Flowers and fruit nearly reach the edges of Jan van Huysum's Still Life with Flowers and Fruit, about 1721, in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Floral painting was widely favored in the eighteenth century. One leaf at the left now has an unexpected color because its paint has changed with exposure to light. Van Huysum originally mixed yellow and blue to obtain green. The yellow component has faded, leaving the blue visible where the original mixture once produced green passages in the composition.
Slovy muzea
The flower still life was a very popular genre in the 18th century, which Van Huysum took to great heights. He filled this painting almost to the edges with flowers and fruit. The colour of the leaf on the left is odd. This is because the yellow pigment Van Huysum mixed with blue to make green has faded under the influence of (sun)light. As a result, the originally green passages in this painting are now blue.
