O obrazu
Two snails creep along an earthen wall in Nagasawa Rosetsu’s Snails, painted about 1788–89 and now in the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland. He mixed crushed white shells into his colours to build a thick surface. This doro-e method, known as earth painting, emulated the substantial strokes he had seen in European oil paintings. Silvery metallic pigment traces the shining paths left on the wall. One of those paths has no snail at its end, leaving the absence unexplained within the image.
Slovy muzea
In this work, Nagasawa Rosetsu carefully described two snails in a manner known as “earth painting” (doro-e), building up colors mixed with crushed white shells in emulation of the thick brushstrokes of oil paint seen in European painting. A silvery metallic pigment indicates the snails’ trails, glistening along an earthen wall. Notably, one trail has no snail, leaving the viewer to guess why.
