O obrazu
Anton Mauve painted The Swamp around 1885–1888. The picture is in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Mauve continually sought untouched countryside as a source for his work and was known for silvery grey landscapes. Here a dark grey sky is reflected across the broad expanse of a desolate marsh. From time to time sunlight breaks through the clouds above it. A church spire can just be made out far away over the horizon. Black birds provide the only visible sign of life in the scene.
Slovy muzea
The dark grey sky is reflected in this vast and desolate swamp landscape, with sunlight occasionally breaking through the clouds. In the far distance, a church steeple can just be seen rising above the horizon while black birds are the only sign of life. Mauve was constantly looking for unspoilt nature to inspire him. He was wellknown for the silvery grey tone of his landscapes.

Settles in Laren in the Gooi
In the last two years of his life Mauve settles in the village of Laren, in the Gooi region around Hilversum. The group of painters who lived there, among them Jozef Israëls and Albert Neuhuys, is known as the Larense School, and the Gooi was dubbed “Mauve land” as far afield as the United States.
