O obrazu

Philips Wouwerman painted The Riding School between about 1658 and 1660; it is in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Horses were central to his scenes of military life, from encampments to cavalry engagements, and to his pictures of hunts. Small incidents involving the animals gave these subjects their narrative character, with details of behaviour worked into the larger scene. Here some horses are being fitted with saddles. Elsewhere a woman and a child only just get out of the way of a kicking horse.

Slovy muzea

Wouwerman is known for his paintings of army camps, cavalry battles and hunting scenes, in which deftly

painted horses always play an important role. Thanks to his eye for detail, these paintings are very lively and anecdotal. In this painting, too, emphasis lies on narrative detail: some horses are being saddled, while a woman and child just manage to avoid being kicked by one of the animals.
