O obrazu

John Singleton Copley painted Catherine Greene in 1769, when the sitter was thirty-four; the portrait is in the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland. Her merchant husband commissioned portraits of them both after thirteen years of marriage. She wears an invented costume inspired by antiquity and assumes a pose borrowed from an English engraving. A rock supports her lean but looks as light as stage scenery. Luxurious fabrics and this imagined setting remove her from ordinary concerns. The painting retains its original frame.

Slovy muzea

The Boston painter Copley's virtuosity at rendering luxurious textiles was precisely the kind of talent that appealed to his patrons. In 1769 the prosperous merchant John Greene commissioned a portrait of himself and this portrait of his wife, Catherine (1735–1785), after thirteen years of marriage. Shown at the age of 34, Mrs. Greene wears a fanciful costume inspired by ancient styles, strikes a pose derived from an English engraving, and pretends to lean against a rock that looks as insubstantial as a theatrical prop. This likeness places Mrs. Greene in an ideal realm far removed from mundane matters. The frame is original.

    A needy tobacconist’s son among Boston’s elite

The income Copley earned by painting in the 1760s was extraordinary for his town and time and raised the son of a needy tobacconist into the local aristocracy. The foremost personages of New England came to his painting-room as sitters.

Explains to West why he is not yet coming to Europe

Copley writes that he would go only with a very good prospect of doing as well there as at home: his present income of 300 guineas a year is a fair living in America, and his mother and young brother depend on him. West replies on 20 September that he has talked over Copley’s prospects with London artists, who agree that he has nothing to hazard.

A trip to New York: thirty-seven portraits

At the invitation of Myles Cooper, president of King’s College, whose portrait Copley had painted in Boston in 1768, he sets up his easel on Broadway in New York and paints thirty-seven portraits. It is his only American tour away from Boston: most of the Southern portraits attributed to him were in fact made by Henry Benbridge.
